Irish Coffee

When I saw on an events calendar that January 25th was International Irish Coffee Day, I was excited to write about this wonderful coffee drink. And guess what: they don't celebrate it in Ireland, because every day is Irish Coffee Day!

What do you need to make Irish coffee?

Supplies:

The official Irish Coffee recipe is maintained by the  International Bartenders Association :

9 centiliter (cl) hot  coffee
4 cl Irish whiskey
3 cl whipped cream (without sugar)
3 teaspoons brown sugar (the English 'teaspoon' is approximately 3 teaspoons)

Whisky or Whiskey?

Before I write about the history of Irish coffee in this blog post, first a brief digression about choosing the right whiskey. There's whisky and whiskey. The former, whisky without the "e," comes from Scotland, and the latter, whiskey, comes from Ireland. Does that make any difference for our recipe? Well, the Irish certainly think so!

Generally speaking, and unlike Scotch whisky, Irish whiskey has less smoky, peated flavors. The Scots, on the other hand, are proud of their "peated," smoky whiskies. Delicious too, especially in autumn and winter, but according to the Irish, not suitable for the official recipe.

The History of Irish Coffee:

Stories vary about who first brewed this coffee drink. In Ireland, a certain Joe Sheridan, chef at the café-restaurant at Foynes Airbase near Limerick, is said to have served the drink to departing passengers in the 1940s.

Another (tall) story involves a journalist from the San Francisco Chronicle who tasted the coffee at Shannon Airport, got the recipe, and took it to The Buena Vista Cafe in San Francisco.

The final story is perhaps the most romantic, partly because traces of it can still be found today: Irish coffee was invented by Joseph Jackson, who later in life  would open Jackson's Hotel Ballybofey  in Donegal. During World War II, he made the drink for his war comrades, expecting it would keep them awake longer during skirmishes with the enemy.

After the war, he brought the recipe for the drink he invented back to Donegal, where he named it Irish Coffee. The hotel still exists, and we contacted them. They have an extensive menu of various Irish Coffees…

How do you make Irish Coffee?

We made several variations and tasted them with our regular coffee group. We were unanimous in our choice of coffee: a characterful Italian coffee with a natural sweetness and a hint of nutty notes was our favorite.

Warm the glasses (24 – 29 cl) by holding them under the hot tap and dry immediately.

Whip the cream until it's fluffy, at the point where it thickens slightly but still slides off a spoon. Don't overwhip it, as you don't want it to become stiff. (Some people add sugar to the whipped cream; in this case, we're sticking to the original recipe and omitting it.)

Place the brown sugar (choose the darkest variety) in the coffee glass and pour in the whiskey, stirring well until all the sugar is dissolved. Pour the coffee into the glass and carefully add the whipped cream. The cream should not mix with the coffee but should sit in a layer on top. You can do this by holding a tablespoon upside down over the glass and letting the cream slide over it.
